ARCHIVED - Thousands of German and American cruise tourists debark in Alicante
Alicante Port port welcomed two cruise ships carrying 3,300 holidaymakers this week
In a much-needed boost to the local economy, Alicante has welcomed the return of cruise tourism and the arrival of two liners with thousands of German and American tourists onboard.
The first ship to enter the port on Monday October 11 was the Celebrity Apex, which docked at 6.30am and 1,400 American passengers debarked.
This is the first time that this ship has stopped off in the city, and remained in Alicante until 5pm the same day, before heading off for its next port of call in Cartagena, Murcia.
The second ship, the Aida Perla, is a regular in Alicante Port and prior to the pandemic visited the city every two weeks. The liner docked at around 8am, and 1,900 German tourists, who had arrived from Palma, then had 12 hours to explore the city before setting sail for Ibiza.
According to port authorities, as soon as the holidaymakers landed, they were divided between a series of organised excursions to sightsee and learn more about Alicante's most emblematic spots, or set off on their own, providing a welcome boost for local businesses.
Almost 100 stopovers in Alicante are planned over the next 16 months, with the port expected to sail past pre-pandemic cruise tourism figures.
Assuming health data continues to improve, the port looks set to welcome 97 cruise ships between October of this year and December 2022 - 35 over the next three months and 62 next year.
