Paseo Cultural, guided cultural tours of Orihuela for groups
Coach parties welcome to decide their own itinerary in the historic city of Orihuela
Every year over 10,000 people take the opportunity to discover more about the rich cultural heritage of the historic city of Orihuela, taking advantage of the cultural tours offered by the Oficina de Turismo in the city centre.
In the Middle Ages Orihuela was first a Moorish city, but after the Reconquista it later became capital of the Procuración (1304) and the Gobernación (1363), both of these being administrative divisions under successive Christian rulers. In 1564 the city became the centre of its own independent diocese, and from the 16th to the 19th century was home to its own university.
All of this has left Orihuela with a wealth of museums, monuments and works of art, including many unique pieces and fascinating tales and anecdotes from centuries gone by.
Group tours to Orihuela can be organized for clubs, associations and other touring parties: contact the Tourist Office on 965 304645 for help in designing your own preferred itinerary and enlist the services of an English-speaking guide.
Oficina de turismo, Orihuela ciudad
The main Tourist Information office in Orihuela is in the Plaza Marqués de Rafal, inside the former palatial residence of the Marqués de Rafal.
However work is underway on a new tourist office nearby in the Plaza Teniente Linares, so this information will change in the near future, although no definitive date for the move has yet been set.
For most visitors this is the recommended first port of call, as the maze of narrow streets in the centre make it almost indispensable to have one of the excellent street maps provided by the Town Hall, and the staff are keen to point visitors in the right direction whether they are looking for museums, religious monuments or any other aspect of the facilities and attractions of Orihuela.
There are two other tourist information points, one on the coast in the Playa del Oriol, Playa Flamenca ( tel 966 76 11 00) Urbanización Platja Flamenca, and in the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre where it is possible to obtain a map.
