First Thursday of every month, arts and crafts days at the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales
Visitors to the Rojales caves can join workshops or show their own work
The cave houses known as the Cuevas del Rodeo in the Vega Baja municipality of Rojales host arts and crafts open days on the first Sunday of every month, providing a great opportunity to go and see the work and products of the people who have set up their workshops and studios there.
Guests are also invited to set up their own stalls and show their own work, and of course the caves are also opened up to visitors on these occasions. The events begin at 11.00, and typically include pottery, painting and recycling workshops as well as occasional concerts and other events.
The 15 caves included in the Cuevas del Rodeo complex were dug into the rock between the 18th and the 20th century and occupy spaces of up to 5 metres high, with the rock and earth excavated being used to create flat platforms outside the homes. These platforms were occupied by vegetable gardens in order to make the residents more self-sufficient.
