Canton travel agents inspect the province of Alicante
International tourism in the province of Alicante has been experiencing almost unprecedented growth over the last couple of years, with passenger numbers at Alicante-Elche airport soaring to well over 12 million last year and the popularity of the Costa Blanca remaining undiminished by the Brexit vote, but the provincial tourist board continues to look for ways to increase the number of visitors still further by opening up new markets.
One of these is the enormous population of China, and this week a delegation of travel agents from the Chinese province of Canton (population approximately 14 million) is visiting Alicante as guests of the Costa Blanca tourist board. The intention is to spread the word about the attractions of Alicante, and during the week the Chinese agents will be visiting a variety of destinations including Altea, Xàbia, Dénia and Xaló as well as the provincial capital.
At the same time, they will be sampling the local cuisine, evaluating the hotel accommodation on offer and visiting the fish market in Denia and a winery in Xaló, exploring some of the many temptations which they can then offer to their customers back home in south-eastern China.
