25th March, La Mata, Vineyards of water and salt tour, Torrevieja
Free tours of the nature reserve are offered in both Spanish and English
During the autumn of 2016 and the spring of 2017 a series of free guided walks are being held in the Natural Park of the saltwater lagoons of Torrevieja and La Mata, offering interesting mornings out while at the same time promoting the natural and cultural heritage of this part of the Vega Baja del Segura area in the south of the province of Alicante.
Four different routes are offered, each focusing on a particular aspect of the natural park, and the explanations provided by the tour guides can be provided in both Spanish and English.
Below is a brief description of each of the four routes, along with the dates on which the walks are being held:
(NOTE: Route 1 is not featured, as this is a night-time walk which was held only during the months of July and August, but the correct route number as featured below is required for booking purposes).
Route 4: "La Mata, viñedos de agua y sal" (La Mata, vineyards of water and salt) is a tour of the vineyards which lie close to the lagoon of La Mata, showing not only the wine and salt producing traditions of the area but also the biodiversity in this part of the park. The tour ends with a tasting of one of the locally produced wines.
Activity dates: 25th March.
A maximum of 50 participants is in place for each tour, and registration is open in the three weeks prior to each event both at www.turismodetorrevieja.com/ecorutas and in person at the tourist information office on Paseo Vista Alegre (open Monday to Friday 9.00 to 19.00 and Saturday 10.00 to 14.00).
All walks are held between 10.00 and 14.00 on the dates specified, and the meeting point is at the information centre in the Natural Park.
Walkers are advised to ensure that they are wearing clothes appropriate for the weather, a cap and sturdy footwear, and to bring drinking water and a snack. Binoculars and cameras are also recommended.
It is also possible to visit the Torrevieja and La Mata natural park at your own leisure at any time, and there is an enjoyable 3km route which is suitable for those who don´t want to climb hills (starting at the visitor centre).
